Tomorrow’s Rain - Ovdan (2024)

cover

Hailing from Israel, today we have Tomorrow’s Rain and their highly polished mixture of Gothic/Death/Doom Metal, unleashing their sophomore release “Ovdan”. Making a big impact with their debut “Hollow” and its plethora of high profile guests, with this release the band continues on a similar path, but also starts to showcase more their own style in tracks without guests.

The release kicks off with the elegant “Roads”, a Doomy song that features Andreas Vingback (Dark Funeral) and Tony Wakeford on guest vocals, creating a very sultry and jazzy vibe at times. Transitioning into “Sunrise” we get the band’s uncompromising Death/Doom core with crafty atmospherics, guitar leads, and tempo changes. In “Muaka”, the acoustic guitars give a certain Empyrium-esque vibe that transitions into distorted guitars and dramatic leads alongside Attila Csihar’s vocals.

Providing a good dose of traditional Death/Doom, “Room 124” is an excellent moody piece from this band. Keeping with the guest appearances, “I Skuggornas Grav” has Mickael Broberg (Unanimated) and Anja Huwe of (Xmal Deutschland) giving the album a different gear, while “Burning Times” returns to more Gothic Doom territories thanks to its dramatic atmospheric and Jan Lubitzki’s (Depressive Age) excellent vocals. The best track in this release has to be the superbly catchy “Turn Around” with Michael Denner unleashing some sick riffs.

As the release closes with the dreamy “Convalescence”, we are again left quite impressed with Tomorrow’s Rain and their very diverse music. While the use of guest appearances makes it hard to focus on the band’s core and signature style, “Ovdan” gives us an extra glimpse of this. There is nothing wrong with all the great tracks in this release, as they are well crafted, engaging, and catchy, but we would like to hear what the band can do with only their own members in the future.
