Dethklok - BABYMETAL - Nekrogoblikon - The Masonic - San Francisco, CA - 4/25/2024

With several shows happening during a short span of time, the Metal scene in San Francisco was in for a treat with Dethklok and BABYMETAL playing not one, but two shows at the amazing The Masonic theater. Sadly we missed the first show, with the band’s pairing with Dragonforce on their latest visit to town, however, Nekrogoblicon was up for the task on the second night.

Filled to the brim with young (and old) Metal heads, the venue ws buzzing as Nekrogoblikon finished their set and people were waiting for Japanese sensation BABYMETAL and their ‘kawaii’ Nu-Metal sound. With all the hype behind them, the band has managed to stay consistent, ignore the haters, and have kept on doing their thing. We actually never saw them live and have heard all kinds of different things about their live shows, so there was definitely some expectation brewing.

Having unparalleled energy, Su-metal, Moametal, and Momometal came out and never really stopped dancing and hyping the crowd. People told us their show was a burst of energy and the girls did not disappoint. We were quite surprised as to how many fans were going completely crazy and even launching some crowd surfing efforts.

Nearing 10 PM local time, Ulcerate took the stage in a commanding way. The band has a very expansive sound with crafty technical/Avant-garde elements mixed in with a crushing Death Metal foundation. Unleashing a wave of sound, people immediately started moshing in the small venue while the band laid waste to everybody with their imposing music.

Overall, BABYMETAL’s show is definitely one of the most intense in the Metal scene these days. Well arranged choreographies, insane energy, and constantly playing to the crowd, these girls know how to perform and kick some ass while doing it. It was quite cool to see people from all ages completely into the band to the point of obsession. We will definitely try to see them again when we can.

Up next we had a band we have been trying for a long time to actually see live. With their hiatus over many years, we thought that we would never get to witness the mighty Dethklok. However, we got lucky on their return and were not going to miss them this time. This fictional cartoon outfit is, in their own show, the biggest band in the whole world and we have loved every single episode and special they have released.

Instead of just having Brendon Small, Gene Hoglan, and Bryan Beller take the stage, the band is touring with an awesome animated production playing behind the band. With very sparse lighting on the band members to focus on the screen, it was definitely an interesting show to witness as it feels like a longer than usual episode, filled with all our favorite tracks and some extras to keep the crowd engaged.

The band definitely nailed all our favorite tracks like Birthday Dethday, Awaken, and Murmaider among many others. Being a great bang for your bucks, this show was long and extremely well produced, with the band sounding amazing alongside the goriness and hilarity of Dethklok. Definitely do not miss out on catching them live, this is a great show and you will leave buzzing from excitement.
