Kissin’ Dynamite – Addicted To Metal (2010)

The current revival/rehashing of ‘traditional’ metal genres such as Trash Metal, old-school Black Metal, and old-school Heavy Metal, has been reaching the point of being extremely ridiculous. Every four out of ten releases we get have to do with some kind of new band playing old-school music. Now, it’s surprisingly shocking to us when we actually get a band trying to do something new and exciting.

Kissin’ Dynamtie hails from Germany and they formed back in 2002 to play… ‘traditional’ Heavy Metal, what a shocker. The band actually is very good at what they do and they capture the old-school sound perfectly. Some people are calling this band the next-best thing after Edguy (for German Heavy Metal), and while we can agree that musically this band is pretty solid, they have no originality at all.

Through twelve songs we are treated to a pristine sounding old-school heavy Metal, that might do the trick for all the nostalgic people out there, but for us it feels way to re-hashed and some times it even sounds like Queen (like the chorus on “Hysteria”). Make no mistake, the band is good and plays very well. But for us, it’s just another one of ‘those bands’ trying to capitalize on a classical genre, and bringing nothing to it.

Musically, the guitar playing is masterful and the solos are delightful. The drumming is very tight and feels just right. The vocals on the album are supper and the vocal arrangements work wonderfully with the music. But you will find yourself asking yourself where have I you heard this riff, or this section, etc. constantly since there are too many recycled parts to even list them here. There is even a cover of “High Enough” in “Addicted To Metal”.

If you are a huge fan of traditional Heavy Metal, then you will definitely LOVE Kissin’ Dynamite, since it has the perfect sound and captures the correct feeling since the first note in this album. But if you expect anything new an ground breaking, then stay away from this album since it’s just a re-hash of many thing that we have all heard before.
