Aeon – Path of Fire (2010)

cover

Hailing from Sweden we have today yet another Death Metal band that wants to be ‘brutal’ and technical at the same time. Aeon is not a very (or at all) original band, but what they do, they do perfectly. With a very groovy sound, the band reminds us of the likes of Jungle Rot, Six Feet Under, etc.

Combining chugging riffs and meaty hooks, the band does a great job in creating a very brutal DM backdrop, with the addition of some brilliant solos and bestial drumming (courtesy of Nils Fjellstrom, from Dark Funeral) the band creates very solid tracks that will have people moshing in no time. While Aeon is an extremely formulaic band, they do have good song writing chops to keep you entertained for over 40 minutes.

The vocals provided by Tommy Dahlstrom are top notch and provide the exactly level of brutality needed for the band’s music. The riffing is chunky and well varied, not getting monotonous at all. An interesting thing is the use of a few atmospheric-type sections on the track “Total Kristus Inversus” and the end of “God Of War”, that make the band sound a bit like Nile (but less brutal).

Production wise, “Path of Fire” is very good and does not suffer from any flaws when it comes to mixing all the instruments together. Every single instrument sounds very good, all centered around the massive drumming from Nils.

There is not much you can say about a band that pretty much sounds like everybody else doing Death Metal, so if you like Jungle Rot and such bands be sure to check out “Path of Fire”. This album while not revolutionary, it’s a very solid effort and a perfect addition to anybody’s Death Metal collection.
