Whitechapel – A New Era of Corruption (2010)

cover

With all the shit-core bands out these days we are very skeptical about reviewing anything that comes with the Metalcore and Deathcore tags. We usually trash most of these bands because of their lack of creativity and musical maturity, using a bunch of random riffs before the ‘traditional’ breakdown is not a formula for success (some might differ with this opinion).

When we first started listening to Whitechapel’s 3rd album “A New Era of Corruption”, the first thing that came to our minds was: “Oh shit, another Black Dahlia Murder clone”. However, after the first few songs we actually discovered that Whitechapel is much more than a ‘straight forward’ Deathcore band. Their sound over the years (yes, we had check them out since their first releases) has changed from an uninspired copy-cat Deathcore, into their own brutal combination of Death Metal with some modern core-ish influences.

The first thing to pop-out of “A New Era of Corruption” is the massive production behind it, making every thing sound extremely brutal and well mixed. The vocals are monumental (similar to Oceano, and similar bands) and they sound like they are straight from hell. The drumming is also massive and sounds very brutal. Before you start thinking Deathcore again, we have to say that EVERYTHING is balanced, all instruments sound equally powerful. The band’s sound is very rich and dense due to the aggressiveness of their music and their skillful production.

The riffing is very powerful and features a lot of groove, something that makes the songs sound both diverse and well crafted. While there are still enough breakdowns to make us cry (at least one per song), they are used in a smarter way than in their previous albums making “A New Era of Corruption” sound better than anything they have released before. Another great thing is that the blistering solos are saved up for only a few occasions and they never take the spotlight away from the brutality of the music.

It has taken Whitechapel a few years to polish their sound, and now they are getting closer to the door of ‘regular’ metal (for us, anything not Deathcore, Metalcore in nature). If the band continues to evolve with their sound and leave the formulaic approach that bands of the genre present, we might find ourselves actually liking this band in the next few years.
