Iron Fate – Cast in Iron (2010)

cover

All the way from Germany today we have Iron Fate and their debut album “Cast in Iron”. This relatively new band features an interesting ‘slower paced’ combination of Heavy/Power Metal with some Thrash elements, we say ‘slower paced’ since this band never goes to 200 mph’s and lacks a bit of the epicness that the genre calls for.

The first thing you will notice about Iron Fate is their extremely versatile (and good) vocalist Denis Brosowski. This front-man can hit notes and resemble almost any Heavy/Power metal vocalist in the scene in a very impressive fashion. While the music behind this great singer is average, we feel that this is what brings Iron Fate down and (for now) stops them from being a great Heavy/Power Metal band.

The band’s musical abilities are sometimes put into question since some songs are very dull and uninspired and only have small flashes of brilliance. However, there are some good songs like “Image A Better World” and “Killer Instinct”, but they are not great by any means. The guitar work is somewhat sub-par for a release of this genre, and lacks a bit more of flair and inspiration.

The bass guitar is probably for us the best thing about the music behind “Cast in Iron”, it’s powerful and commanding and keeps things together very nicely but it’s held back by the simple guitar melodies and some nicely done solos. The drumming is very well crafted but since the guitar work is sub-par, it also comes up short from a solid Heavy/Power Metal album.

The overall ‘slower’ pace of the album makes “Cast in Iron” an interesting release in the sense that it does not sound exactly like all Power/Heavy Metal releases. While the band is still not ‘quite there’ as one of the best bands in the genre, they show very promising flashes of brilliance. Paired with the excellent vocals of Denis Brosowski, Iron Fate can become a very solid band if they focus more on their song writing abilities. “Cast in Iron” is still worth a listen by all the fans of the genre since we expect to hear more (and better) from this band in the future.
