Lyan / Blien Vesne (split) - Esperar Eternity (2011)

cover

With the current popularity of Post-Rock and its variations, we have recently received tons of album submissions of this genre but there are only handfuls that are very interesting and pleasant to listen to. “Esperar Eternity” is one of those select few albums that we can say are pretty solid and should be purchased. Featuring five tracks of Ambient Post-Rock from Lyan and four tracks from Blien Vesne (post-rock), this release has a very high atmospheric content that should be heard.

Opening the release with the Ambient sounds of “Toi Cho Doi”, we are treated to beautiful landscapes for melancholy. This song nicely creates an atmosphere of peace that will calm even the most hyper person in the world. The magic continues with “Cotton House”, where there are some electronic-like elements and ethereal vocals added to the mix. “Childhood’s Seasons” follows the same path but with a deeper atmosphere, a very magical song (and our favorite from the Lyan side of things).

The lullaby elements of “When I was A Littlle Child” make this song very relaxing and it creates a nice build up. On “Lulled to Eternity” the guitar work is pretty mellow and the vocals are just outstanding, creating another very nice atmospheric piece that will haunt your dreams (and with Female vocals).  In general, the Lyan side of things in this release is very atmospheric an ethereal to the point that you will be in a deep trance before it is over. What a great way to showcase the band’s talents in only 5 songs.

In a more traditional Post-Rock fashion, Blien Vesne’s side of things starts with the very intricate and depressing “La Cara y El Suelo”. We particularly love the cello use, but are kind of confused by the electronic elements. This song fully explodes into “Sanar”, and you can immediately listen to the typical dreamy Post-Rock guitars that we all love from this genre. Interestingly enough, “Sanar” also features more build-up time and near the end it delivers its goods. The dreamy elements of these songs are not fully original, but the band does well in creating the lead up to them. In the monumental “Rendir”, a ten minute track, the build-up is very effective, and when the song peaks, pure Post-Rock magic happens.

“Esperar” closes of this release and it is a nice treat for fans that can take any more buildup and just want the cusp of a Post-Rock song since it continues from the end sections of “Rendir”. Not as impressive as Lyan’s side, Blien Vesne does a good job in creating build-up for their songs, but delivers just what everybody else does in the genre. However, this does not mean that the songs are bad or that Blien Vesne is not talented.

In general, for a split release we are treated with many great songs that build upon each other. The Post-Rock elements are very standard when it comes to Blien Vesne, but the atmospheric parts of both bands are excellent. If you are looking for new bands to get into, we recommend you check these two bands in this release. Also, if you are a die hard collector, this slip is limited to only 200 copies, so rush for yours.
