Nemesea – The Quiet Resistance (2011)

cover

Four years have passed since Nemeasea’s last album “In Control” and on this 2011 they return stronger than ever with the very well crafted “The Quiet Resistance” release. Morphing from a Symphonic Gothic Metal outfit to a more alternative and fresher Gothic Rock sound, the band manages to keep things ‘heavy’ and not sound overly Pop-ish like many Gothic Rock/Metal bands have been doing in the last years.

Lead by the charismatic and powerful vocals of Manda Ophuis, Nemesea’s sound has matured greatly over the years and now they deliver confident and efficient songs that go straight to the point and never get dull. The band’s alternative and almost mainstream sound is still on their own terms and they never sound like a mash up of Britney Spears with some distorted guitars thrown into the mix (hint: Amaranthe).

Delivering powerful riffs and a very catchy chorus section, “Caught in the Middle” opens this release with a bang. The keyboards are very effective and the overall power behind the song is incredible. Moving into a bit of mainstream territory “Afterlife” is a very emotional song and it is greatly delivered by Manda’s amazing vocals, this song is totally going into our ‘making out’ playlist.

Another song going into our power ballad’s playlist has to be “If You Could”. In this song we have to agree that Nemesea does sound a bit too alternative rock, but it is still a pretty good song. Coming back with the atmospheric keyboards and an overall more Gothic sound we have “High Enough”. The electronic elements nicely enhance this song and also keep it from sounding completely out of place in this release. “Say”, “It’s Over”, “I Live” and “Stay With Me” keep a very similar vibe going, allowing the album to nicely flow and keep the listener engaged, perfect ordering of the songs we might say.

The enigmatic “2012” track is probably the most experimental thing in this release and it is indeed a nice atmospheric piece that serves the purpose of winding down this release. Just before the end we have the futuristic and extreme Gothic “Allein” bonus track, this track features male vocals and has the Goth vibe due to the Synths and male vocals all written over it. This song indeed is a great closing track that will leave all listeners very pleased with this release.

If you are looking for a catchy, dark, and powerful release with amazing female vocals, look no further and get “The Quiet Resistance”. Nemesea shows great signs of maturity and all their songs are very relatable and never get dull or repetitive. We are sure there is something for everybody in this album since we have some very ‘Rock-ish’ sounding tracks, some Gothic Metal sounding tracks, and some power ballads. This is probably one of the top 10 Gothic Metal/Rock albums of the year so throw away your shitty new Evanescence and Amaranthe albums and get this one instead.
