Lullacry – Where Angels Fear (2012)

cover

Finally after a seven year wait, Lullacry is set to release their 5th full-length release titled “Where Angels Fear”. In this latest release, the band sounds very mature and avoids the cliché Gothic Metal or Pop-Metal release and favors a heavier and darker Melodic Heavy Metal release with just a few Gothic Metal hints. Featuring 11 hard-hitting tracks, “Where Angels Fear” is by far the best release of the band since “Crucify My Heart”.

Being huge fans of the band’s previous releases, we are just realizing that we are old since the last album we liked from the band was almost 10 years ago. Aside from this, the band has also managed to stay pretty much intact and features the same lineup since 2002 when Tanja Lainio joined the band. This has clearly allowed them to fully develop a sound of their own and be able to produce such a mature release with “Where Angels Fear”.

“Antidote To You” opens this release with high-octane guitar riffs and very catchy vocals. The band’s guitarists Sauli Kivilahti and Sami Leppikangas know exactly what they are doing and craft very effective riffs. Tanja’s vocals are very strong and well defined, a staple that has made Lullacry unique from countless other bands. The catchiness keeps flowing with “Still and Angel” and “Thousand Suns”, two very direct and enjoyable tracks.

Showcasing some clean male vocals, we have “Feel My Revenge”, a slower track that has a nice ballad edge to it and sounds very different from the first three songs. With a powerful and catchy chorus section, “Bad Blood” shows that the band is ready to take the spotlight again and has excellent songs to do it. One thing that caught our attention is the band’s ability to shift from full-on rocking mode to instrumental passages that nicely change the pace of the song like on “Gone are the Days”.

One of the album’s sure ‘singles’ has to be the epic ballad “Broken (Into Pieces)”. In this very mellow and emotional piece, Tanja’s vocals nicely shine and are very well surrounded by emotional guitars and a powerful bass guitar line. The closing acoustic track is another standout piece in this release since it drastically changes the pace of the release, and closes with a nice lullaby that is perfect to send somebody to bed (not because it is boring of course).

Lullacry has always been a quality band and with “Where Angels Fear” they sound better than ever. All the songs in this release are very well crafted and deliver raw and powerful emotions through the band’s very diverse and engaging music. If you are looking for a heavier female-fronted release, look no further and get this excellent release.
