Lonewolf – Army of the Damned (2012)

cover

Hailing from France, today we have the Heavy/Power Metal outfit named Lonewolf and their surprisingly very engaging release “Army of the Damned”. While not having anything original about their sound, Lonewolf does an excellent job in crafting 11 super-catchy headbanging inducing tracks that will stick to your head for days to come.

Opening with the track titled “Lonewolf”, the band delivers commanding guitar riffs and solos, powerful keyboards in a very traditional sounding track that is super catchy in nature. The vocals are your typical late 90’s raspy Heavy Metal style, but they actually feel very well fitted for the more modern and richer sound of the band. Things continue to get even catchier with the excellent “Crawling to Hell”, a track that has a slight Manowar vibe. The chorus section is pretty solid, allowing this track to have all the makings of a true Metal anthem.

With a brilliant semi-shredding opening, “Soulreapers” is the best song in this release due to the epic feeling it transmits. In this song Lonewolf have managed to seamlessly combine the best things of older Heavy Metal and Modern Power Metal to deliver a powerful song with an extremely high replay value. With more waves of catchy riffs and superb guitar solos, “Celtic Heart”, The Last Defenders” and “Cold” show the bands ability to keep cranking out songs that are not boring or too similar to each other, making the album quite diverse and a great purchase.

If you are looking for melodic epicness, “The One you never See” has all this in a 5 minute package. With excellent melodic sections and equally amazing vocal melodies, this track is very similar to older traditional Heavy Metal and the whole epic feeling that songs from people like Dio used to have. Rocking until the end, “Army of the Damned” comes to a close with the last two epics “Tally Ho” and “One Second in Eternity”.

As we mentioned before, we are blown away by the quality of music presented by Lonewolf. In a similar fashion than Gravedigger and similar bands, this French outfit is keeping the old school vibe alive with a nice edge of modern elements. If you like anything from Modern Heavy Metal to the old school Heavy/Power Metal, this is a release that you don’t want to miss.
