Nachtblut – Dogma (2012)

cover

Being suckers for sappy Black Metal with high levels of keyboards and catchy melodies, we are pretty delighted to have found Nachtblut’s latest release “Dogma” in our review queue. Hailing from Germany, this band plays a more dramatic and industrial version of Siebenbürgen’s, Graveworms’s and Agathodaimon’s dabbles in the realm of Symphonic Black Metal. Nachtblut managed to keep our attentions on their music for the 50 minutes this release lasted... every single time we played it.

The album title track “Dogma” quickly sneaks up on the listener with powerful guitar riffs, hellish vocals and very cool keyboards. There is nothing complex about this song, but the rather simple and direct approach of the track makes it very engaging. The band keeps building on their sound on “Der Weg Ist Das Ziel”, where they add more double-kick sections and a more dramatic synth orchestration background. The same applies to the circus-like “Ich Trinke Blut”.

The electronic/industrial elements make their way on the track “Eiskonigin” and its super catchy chorus section. “Rache” keeps moving in this direction and also adding some more traditional Gothic Metal elements, but still being super catchy and very intoxicating. The dramatic opening of “Mein Herz In Ihren Handen” makes this track our favorite one of the release since it nicely morphs into a very melodic piece with heavy guitars and nice orchestrations.

The ‘vampiric sounding’ (at least to us) “Bussakrament” immediately makes our second best song place thanks to its very catchy design and well-crafted sections. Being far from traditional, this track nicely elevates the band’s sound and shows that they can seriously craft nice atmospheric pieces with super catchy elements. The weird “Schritte” ends this release on a weird, but somewhat expected note. The band does a great job in mixing stuff in a weird ways and the closing track is not an exception.

If you want to hear something very unconventional that mixes elements of Melodic and Symphonic Black Metal with more dark atmospheric elements and some gothic/industrial/electronic influences, then Nachtblut is something you defiantly want to check out. The band’s brand of Dark Metal is very well crafted and every song features stuff that might take a few listens to fully fit in, but once it does, it is brilliant. “Dogma” is by far one of the most interesting releases we have heard from Napalm Records this year.
