Devilish Impressions – Simulacra (2012)

cover

Making quite an impact since the first song, today we have Poland’s Devilish Impressions latest release titled “Simulacra”. Being properly released through Lifeforce records this July, this is one of those albums that combines so many different elements in a very cohesive and successful way, making it super diverse and extremely exciting.

“Icaros” opens with release with a mixture of Vintersorg meets Dimmu Borgir atmosphere, thanks to the hefty use of synths and the awesome clean vocals. Setting the bar this high, the band also delivers pretty solid melodic Black/Death-ish music that is very direct and well crafted. The atmospheric side of things keeps making this album very appealing in “Legion of Chaos”, but it is the massive drumming and heavy riffing that ultimately makes this song super catchy and effective.

The dramatic “Lilith” is one of our favorite tracks in this release since it actually changes the mood of this release to a more melodic and depressive sound. The band so far has done a great job in creating excellent atmospheric pieces that are well developed using a perfect combination of shrieks and growls, paired with melodic guitar work. Instantly reminding us of Anorexia Nervosa, Graveworm (older stuff), and Vesperian Sorrow, “The Scream of the Lambs” is a more traditional and straight forward Melodic Death/Black song with Gothic Metal hints.

“Vi Veri Vniversum Vivus Vici” delivers very bombastic arrangements and a pretty funky drumming, making this song quite a delight to listen to, and showcases the band’s excellent technical abilities both in the drums and the crazy solos. Closing “Simulacra”, we have the super lush and majestic instrumental “Solitude”, a very powerful and engaging track that showcases the masterful composition skills that the band has.

In general, we have to say that “Simulacra” is one of those multi-faceted releases that has a bit for everybody. The extreme synths, the brutal drumming, and the excellent guitar work, make this album very well crafted and allow it to flow very naturally with plenty of exciting parts. Devilish Impressions is a pretty solid band that has a very rich and diverse sound, and while not entirely original, they do an excellent job at crafting catchy tunes that will stick on your head for quite a while.
