Old Wainds - Death Nord Kult (2009)

cover

Old Wainds hails from Russia, and their sound is a quite interesting mix of Black Metal with some Trash elements and some Shoe-gaze elemets in between. “Death Nord Kult” provides us with a very good release since it’s the Black Metal we all like, but they add their own things to the mix, separating this release from the hundreds of releases every year.

“Death Nord Kult” kicks off in a ‘trashy’ fashion, since the first songs are a mixture of Black and Trash, and they are well executed and provide an nice taste of what is ahead in the album. You can clearly see the change after the first 3 songs into a more melodic style of black metal, since the songs keep the same intensity, but you can notice slowdowns in some of them. These slowdowns are what make this album different for me, since the guitar lines follow the overall tendency of the songs, but their cadency is slower and provides good room for some rhythmical head banging.

The drumming is very solid and the vocals seem like straight from hell, so these requirements of a Black metal release are clearly meet. The overall production of the album is very good, since they have the rawness of the guitars very well mixed with the crystal clear drum lines.

I would definitely recommend this album for all people looking for solid a Black Metal release that features blazing fast music and unholy shrieks from hell. All in a very well produced environment that allows the music to be clearly enjoyed in all layers.
