Huntress – Starbound Beast (2013)

cover

After taking the scene by surprise with their excellent 2012 release “Spell Eater”, today we have Huntress and their latest monumental Heavy Metal release “Starbound Beast”. While many bands get away with shitty music just by having attitude and image, Huntress delivers the whole package lead by Jill Janus and the band’s very classic and powerful music. For over ten tracks the band greatly improves over their debut full-length and manages to raise the bar a few notches with this album.

Doing a 180 switch on the opener/intro “Enter the Exosphere”, we can hear Jill’s classically trained vocals morph into screams. The first dagger has been delivered and as soon as “Blood Sisters” opens we get to hear the band’s catchy and very timeless Heavy Metal sound. The track’s energy is quite similar to old-school Heavy Metal, attitude and everything. The band produces one of the best chorus sections on “I Want to Fuck You to Death” in the last fear years, and we can totally picture legions of fans chanting that particular section at live shows.

The band keeps delivering hit after hit with the excellent tracks: “Destroy Your Life”, “Starbound Beast”, and “Zenith”. All of these tracks contain a brutal dosage of killer riffs, blistering solos, and powerful vocals that bring us back to the glory days of Heavy Metal with the likes of Dio and Doro leading the pack. Other tracks like “Oracle” and “Receiver” greatly demonstrate the excellent guitar work and amazing production this release features. The album closes with the very mellow and quite trippy “Alpha Tauri”, the band’s incursion into dreamy and psychedelic territories, showing once more their versatility and skill.

Keeping their label roster fresh, we are quite pleased that Napalm Records is putting out this excellent release. Huntress is an excellent band when it comes to crafting catchy and timeless Heavy Metal songs and Jill Janus is an excellent front-woman for the band. However, while the clean vocals are quite good, some of the harsh screams could have been left out. If you are looking for some party Heavy Metal music with excellent melodic passages, powerful guitars, and a high-octane energy, look no further and get “Satrbound Beast”.
