Sepultura – The Mediator between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart (2013)

Delivering another brilliant onslaught of aggressive and catchy songs, today we have Sepultura and their latest release “The Mediator between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart”. With over 45 minutes of their signature sound, the band goes throw a wide variety of equally intoxicating tunes that will have all fans headbaning from beginning to end, and puzzling some with a few unconventional (for Sepultura) songs. With the band’s ‘new’ drummer, Eloy Casagrande, fully incorporated with the band, this is one release you don’t want to miss.

Opening with the powerful “Trauma of War”, we get the full-blown Seputural treatment with incisive riffs and pummeling vocals. The first unconventional song comes under the title of “The Vatican”, featuring very dark and sinister orchestrations to open. This reminded us a bit of Dimmu Borgir and Fleshgod Apocalypse thanks to how dramatic the song starts before it kicks off into full-on Sepultura mode with some pounding guitars and killer drumming. The tribal-esque drumming returns in “Impending Doom” and “The Bliss of Ignorants”, making these tracks very characteristic of the band.

While the band’s power and catchiness is undeniable through the album, we appreciated the songs they experimented a bit with, like “Grief” for example. In this track, we have a very mellow and dark vibe that starts things quite slowly and very melodic, something quite unique and different for this album. As we mentioned before, Eloy’s drumming and percussions are quite fitting for the band and on tracks like “The Age of The Atheist”, you get flashbacks of Igor Cavalera’s style. Another standout track in this release is “Obsessed”, a song that features Dave Lombardo on drums, so you can imagine he did an interesting job on it.

As the album comes to a close, the band cranks out a cover of “Da Lama ao Caos”, a track originally made by some Brazilian band that we never heard off. While we think this is cool since it is a different song indeed, and they get that band exposure, we also think it could have been left for a bonus track or something like that. Anyways, “The Mediator between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart” is one hell of a release that shows why Sepultura has retained their reputation over the years as one of the premiere Metal bands in the world. If you are a fan of their older work, do not hesitate to buy a copy of this excellent album.
