Dodsferd – Wastes of Life (2015)

cover

In recent years we have been plagued with subpar Black Metal bands; luckily for us Dodsferd is one of the most interesting bands in the scene nicely transitioning from Depressive Black Metal to a very weird, but yet effective atmospheric Black Metal that will leave you scratching your head… in a good way. Featuring five tracks and nearly 50 minutes of music, the band continues their sonic onslaught with a very unique release titled “Wastes of Life”.

Opening with a very traditional atmospheric piece titled “Wastes of Life”, the band picks with where they left off creating a very oppressive and eerie atmosphere. Leading the charge with some very dramatic clean guitars, “Sterile Death, Without Mourning” delivers 12 minutes of brilliant atmospheric madness. The track suddenly shifts to a very mellow tempo filled with creepy atmospheric arrangements and Wrath’s signature shrieks.

Moving into a mixture of Doomy Black’n’Roll territory, “The Dead Have No Speech For” delivers solid melodic riffs and a few killer guitar leads. This track is quite a change from the previous two, but it is actually very good and engaging as it shows a different side of the band. Building up some insane tension with the opening of “To The Fall of Man”, we are treated to a very contrasting song featuring calm guitars and harsh shrieks of pain. Suddenly we have lush classical arrangements and clean vocals filled with despair, perfectly making the vibe even more melancholic and demoralizing. This track is by far the most disturbing and awesome song in this release.

Closing the release with the brilliant Post-Rock-ish atmospheric piece “Graves of Your Creator”, the band closes with a certain Anathema/Antimatter meets Black Metal vibe, leaving us waiting for more. The album slowly transitions into unexplored territory and while maintaining the Dodsferd signature creepiness, it pushes the band’s sound to more expansive and experimental territories. If you like atmospheric/depressive music that has strong Black Metal influences, look no further and pickup with very unique release.
