Blaze of Sorrow – El Eremita del Fuoco (2015)

cover

Being one of the finest Atmospheric Black Metal bands in the scene, Blaze of Sorrow returns with yet another excellent release with “El Eremita del Fuoco”. Filled with brilliant melodic passages, this album reminds us of the earlier Alcest stuff mixed with some older Agalloch as well. Clocking in at around 40 minutes, this is one of the best releases of the genre in 2015.

Opening with the ethereal “La Conquista del Cielo”, the band sets a very melancholic mood early in this release. Featuring very subtle atmospheric elements and bleak soundscapes, the track nicely explodes into BM riffs that are more melodic than aggressive. Continuing strong, “La Madre” is a bit more aggressive and playful with very well defined drum patterns and headbanging passages.

The Alcest “Écailles de Lune” worship is very evident on “Eremita del Fuoco”, with a very familiar riff. However, the band gives it their own spin with their harsher deep vocals and crafty experimentation. Our favorite track has to be the first four minutes of “I Quattro Volti”, as they have some pretty abrupt tempo changes that don’t work in this one. Focusing their inner Agalloch, “Il Paso del Titano” is another pretty catchy piece that is filled with melodic brilliance and a very moody atmosphere.

Never being dull, the Folkish “L’Ascesa” actually reminded us of Ulver and their earlier days, with very incisive music that perfectly combined melody and aggression. Ending the album with the magical “Epitaffio di Luna”, the band manages to keep things fresh with lush atmospheric elements in a very ethereal and dreamy context. If you like the older Alcest, Agalloch, and those bands that mix lush atmospheric and dreamy elements with firm aggressive riffs and vocals, “El Eremita del Fuoco” is one album that can’t be missing in your collection.
