VIII – Decathexis (2016)

cover

Hailing from Italy, today we have the very unconventional Avant-garde Black Metal outfit VIII and their sophomore release “Decathexis”. Featuring over 45 minute of highly entertaining and chaotic music, this release is quite engaging and well crafted, as you never know what to expect next.

Opening with the Black Metal onslaughts of “Symptom”, the band starts punishing the listener with the aggressive side of their music. The throbbing bass guitar line stands out from the band’s relentless onslaughts. The tempo changes featured in this track give it a sinister edge when paired with the extra atmospheric elements.

Things get jazzy and very dreamy with the trippy “Diagnosis”, our favorite track in this release. The band nicely weaves back and forth between atmospheric passages and some solid heavy riffing sections. This track reminds us a bit of Ihsahn’s experimental stuff with a few different ideas thrown in the mix.

Bringing everything together, “Prognosis” closes this release with very melodic and punishing riffs paired to perfection with trippy atmospheric sections. The Spanish guitar-like passage is the perfect example of the band’s unique creativity and diverse sound. Overall, “Decathexis” showcases a very creative band in VIII. If you like Black Metal bands that push the boundaries and yet remain heavy and true to the genre’s core, look no further and start following VIII.
