Canis Dirus – A Somber Wind From A Distant Shore (2009)

cover

Ambient Raw Black Metal newcomers Canis Dirus hail from Minnesota, USA, yeah you read correctly from the USA. This two man band is probably one of the best new bands of the genre hailing from the USA besides Wolves Of The Throne Room.

Invoking the old Burzum sound as well as the insane vocals of Bethlehem’s first albums “A Somber Wind From A Distant Shore” is a very solid release that features a very primitive and raw sound that will send shivers down to anybody’s spine after listening to it in the dark or better yet in the woods.

The vocals are one of the most haunting, chilling and demented I’ve heard since the “Dictius Te Necare” from Bethlehem, they are so extreme sounding that my neighbors came to knock on my door to check if I was torturing somebody in my house when I had this album on my home theater system.

Before your start thinking that the whole combinations of elements that I’ve just mentioned can make a very bad album, there is more than this to the band’s sound. There are actually melodic parts and parts where the whole Ambient feeling is not needed; some bizarre guitar solos and acoustic passages adorn this whole demented trip in to the minds of TMP and RH, which are the two band members of Canis Dirus.

The album is very well paced and it never gets dull or boring like many releases of this genre, the songs are long but are very well structured to keep the listener hooked into them, and before you even know it the whole album has flown by.

The band’s enigmatic presence (or lack of) in the web makes information about them hard to come by, and just adds into the overall darkness and mystery behind their deranged composition of nihilistic nature.

Again I thought I was for another dime a dozen shitty Ambient BM band, but Moribund Records managed to surprise me once more with a quality release that I’m very glad I did not discarded since the first song. If you like Ambient BM this is the album for you.
