Tenebrae In Perpetuum - L’Eterno Maligno Silenzio (2009)

cover

Hailing from Italy, Tenebrae In Perpetuum plays (as you can imagine) old school Black Metal. As you can also expect there is nothing ground breaking about this band or the album itself, but…. I don’t think that the band has never set out to re-shape a musical genre or be pioneers in anything. This review is also not a bad one, so keep reading.

The band manages to re-create that bone chilling old school BM sound with perfection and throw a few things here and there to complement it. The traditional tremolo picking riffs are present from beginning to end of the album and they are very efficient in creating a bleak atmosphere.

While the band does not use millions of different riffs, and most of the riffs used in the album sound very familiar to the genre, this does not matter in my opinion since the combination of this element along the other instruments creates a very dense atmosphere and this is what I think should matter in this type of releases.

The drumming is very minimalist and it only goes full speed when needed, it’s never over done or over produced so it sounds just right. The bass guitar is surprisingly very well used in the songs and mixed also to perfection to accompany the guitar riffs.

The vocals, crafted by a new vocalist called: Ildanach, are very solid and provide the necessary rawness that the music needs, and while they are not as good as Pest’s vocals, they are still pretty decent. The use of clean mournful choirs are what I think gives this album the extra edge over other releases of this genre that I’ve heard this year. The painful feeling transferred by these choirs creates a very haunting atmosphere that reeks of bleakness.

The Italian lyrics add some extra points to this band in my book, since when you can understand them they sound very eerie giving that whole obscure ritual feeling to the music.

Overall I think “L’Eterno Maligno Silenzio” is a very solid third album from this band that is on it’s way to be admitted into the selected circle of ‘cult’ Black Metal bands, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to get this album.
