Entartung – Baptised into the Faith of Lust (2017)

cover

Delivering one of the most devastating Black Metal assaults in the last few years, today we have Entartung and their demoralizing third full-length release “Baptised into the Faith of Lust”. Featuring seven tracks and over 40 minutes of music, this release is an exercise in brutality and aural dissonance. The band sets a very high bar with their pummeling style filled with brilliant tempo changes and savage intensity.

Opening with the blistering “Resurrectio Mortuorum”, the riffing intensity is the first thing to be noticed. Perfectly paired with tight drumming and a throbbing bass guitar line, Lykormas guitar work is reminiscent of genre greats Horna and Sargeist. Combining rawness with melody, “Vices of Prophet” is definitely one of the best BM tracks we have heard in quite a while, as it instantly induces a head-banging trance.

As the band pummels through tracks like “De Sura Frukterna” and “Der Werwolf” we are constantly reminded of their excellent musicianship and song writing skills. Each song perfectly blends multiple tempos to create unique aural experiences that are intense and yet filled with melodic undertones. Vulfolaic handles the main vocal duties while providing intense bass guitar lines, all while Haistulf keeps things squared away with his crushing drumming skills, as we can hear in the brilliant “Black Dog of God”.

The album closes with the atmospheric “Hymne à la Beauté”, which has a certain creepy element to it thanks to the somber keyboards and mysterious voices. Overall, “Baptised into the Faith of Lust” is one hell of a release filled with memorable tracks that go beyond the current waves of gimmicky Black Metal that is being released. Entartung is the real deal when it comes to putting words and music into BM anthems that are brutal and yet melodic when needed. If you like BM to be punishing and filled with hate, look no further and get this release.
