Tusmörke – Hinsides (2017)

Hailing from Norway, today we have the return of Tusmörke and their whacky retro mixture of Psychedelic Rock with Progressive elements. With a hearty 60’s/70’s vibe, this release has a very warm and fuzzy sound that is brilliantly complemented by folky rhythms and very fitting vocal arrangements. Slowly refining their sound over the years, the band is still as original and crazy as when we first got introduced to them back in 2012 with their “Underjordisk Tusmørke” release.

Opening with the festive “Hjemsokte Hjem”, the band sets the mood with funky percussions, energetic flutes, very melodic vocal arrangements, and dreamy atmospherics. Moving into more proggy and psychedelic territories, “Rykende Ruin” is a song that slowly progresses with very catchy synths and flutes leading the way. We particularly love how the band layers multiple elements to deliver a very retro and yet unique sound that is unlike any other band these days.

Reminding us of The Doors with some Jethro Tull thrown into the mix, “Lyssky Drom” is a very accessible track that is intoxicating with its lush instrumentation and playful nature. In a similar note, “I Feel Like Midnight” provides a relaxing window into what the band would sound if they switching from singing in Norwegian to English on a regular basis. Interestingly enough, the language of the songs is really secondary as the music is quite exquisite and makes us forget in what language the band sings.

Closing with the 24-minute behemoth of “Sankt Sebastians Alter”, the band goes all out with this rollercoaster ride filled with exciting tempo changes and intricate drum patterns. Featuring some of the most intense moments in this release the band signs off with a very unique and massive track. Overall, “Hinsides” continues with the band’s tradition of making truly unique music that captures the essence of Psychedelic/Folk Rock but under Tusmörke terms. If you are looking for something catchy, original, and very unconventional, look no further.
