DragonForce – Reaching into Infinity (2017)

cover

As one of the most anticipated releases of 2017, today we have DragonForce and their brilliant return with “Reaching into Infinity”. Delivering over 60 minutes of their signature Power Metal, the band returns with a highly palatable and diverse release that will please old and new fans alike. Never resting on their laurels, the band continues to shape their sound by crafting ten brilliant tracks that are versatile, fast-paced, and highly memorable.

The band perfectly anticipates this release with the grand opening of the album’s title track intro. This leads to the epicness of “Ashes of the Dawn”, a brilliantly paced tune that perfectly combines an upbeat tempo and emotional vocal arrangements. The band’s signature playful videogame-styled music appears on the intense “Judgment Day” and “Astral Empire”, where you have Herman Li, Sam Totman and Vadim Pruzhanov furiously playing off each other’s skills.

As the band pummels through tracks like “Course of Darkness” and the dreamy “Midnight Madness”, it is safe to say they are not showing any signs of slowing down as they crank up the musical virtuosity to 11. Showcasing their versatility, “Silence” is a fitting power-ballad that nicely breaks up the release and provides the listener a small break from the album’s intensity. Flexing their more traditional Heavy Metal muscles, “War!” has a very nice retro vibe to it with a certain flair of 80’s NWOBHM.

Our favorite track is the epic “Land of Shattered Dreams”, which features the signature DragonForce intensity and musicality, making it highly addictive and engaging. The band channels their inner Stratovarius with the 11-minute epic “The Edge of the World”, a brilliant piece that sounds more like a traditional Power Metal piece with some DragonForce sprinkles thrown into the mix.

Closing the regular release with “Our Final Stand”, the band leaves on a high note mixing faster paced sections with soaring vocal arrangements that leave you wanting more. Luckily, the special edition features two excellent bonus tracks with “Hatred and Revenge” and a very solid cover of Death’s “Evil Dead”. Overall, “Reaching into Infinity” is one hell of a release that is very DragonForce-y while expanding into new territories. The band delivers quite an intense album filled with magical details that slowly become evident the more times you listen to this release and will make you love it even more.
