October File – Our Souls To You (2010)

cover

With their very interesting and modern sounding mixture of hardcore, industrial metal and even some metalcore-ish influences, October File is back with “Our Souls To You”. The band’s third full-length release and we must say a very shitty one. Featuring two mixes of the tracks in this album, to us it indicates that the band was not fully satisfied with the end result and decided to let the fans pick the one they like the best.

“Our Souls To You” is a ‘good’ album for the first two songs, and later you discover that is the same stuff over and over (and we don’t mean because of the ‘double’ tracks featuring different mix). With “Holy Armour from the Jaws of God” the band left off in a high note, but with this new release it feels they forgot how to make good music.

We don’t enjoy trashing albums too much, but when it’s deserved we can’t hold it inside. The riffing feels very uninspired, monotonous and highly repetitive to the point that made us wonder if we had one song looped over and over when listening to the album. The screams get to be very tiring and get dull very quickly. Some of the ‘cleaner’ vocal sections like on “Dredge” show how empty the lyrics are, and made us want to dig up a Grindcore album in order to find compelling lyrics.

We will stop now, and just warn you that “Our Souls to You” is nowhere near anything the band has released before. If you need to add another dull Modern Metal album to your collection go right ahead and get this excuse of an album. But if you expect the real October File, then just stay away from this one.
