Oyabun – Gods and Dogs (2010)

cover

Hailing from France, today we have Oyabun and their very entertaining release “Gods and Dogs”. The band’s sound is a mixture of 70’s Rock with some psychedelic elements, Stoner Rock influences, and some Blues. All of these influences are nicely packaged into seven songs that while not extremely original, they are very catchy and well crafted.

Opening with “Brontosaurus Blues”, the band gives a full view of what it is to come in this release: catchy and groovy guitar riffs, some Stoner/Sludge influences and very retro-sounding vocals. While many bands try to emulate the Psychedelic Rock influences, Onyabun sounds very naturally at it, and does not care too much about focusing on the ‘occult’ side of things.

Our favorite song “Fahrenheit” creates a very mellow atmosphere, and even though it borrows from the other songs, it is good enough to stand by itself and create a very groovy atmosphere (particularly the Bluesy bass guitar). On “Back to Full Color Mode” the band slowly builds momentum and delivers a very entertaining song.

Among the already mentioned things, we particularly enjoy that Oyabun’s sound is very mellow and natural; tacks like “Time to Say Goodnight” are a clear example of this. The closer “Rock 'n' Roll Stage” provides a nice end to a very enjoyable release and shows the band’s ‘aggressive’ side.

In general, we have to admit that even if the band’s creativity in this release is somewhat limited, we actually enjoyed this release. “Gods and Dogs” features a very solid mixture of musical genres, and Oyabun creates catchy and enjoyable tunes. If you are looking for a band that has a very natural and easy going sound, you should definitely check out Onyabun and this entertaining release with a very interesting cover art concept.
