After writing about music for over 15 years, releases rarely surprise us with their take on Metal music. However, every year there are a handful of albums/bands that are just ahead of their time or just bored with the status quo. This year’s selection includes some very weird and cool stuff as well as otherworldly albums that transport the listener with their unique craftiness.
Superbly weird Black Metal with tons of interesting elements and funkiness, reminding us of Ephel Duath and similar outfits. |
Completely ethereal and dream-like release from this new band. Heike Langhans vocal talents elevate the band’s core Doom/Drone/Darkwave elements while delivering a truly haunting experience. |
This short EP delivers a single 24-minute track filled with madness and yet very cohesive experimentation. This is definitely a band we will keep an ear out for in the future thanks to their unique ideas. |
You all know we are huge fans of Manes and their unique brand of weirdness. While this is a single and not an EP, Manes shows us a peak of what is to come as they continue their genre-bending exploits with plenty of atmospherics and interesting guest vocals spots by both Anna Murphy (Cellar Darling) and Ana Carolina Skaret (Mourning Sun). |
Hands down this is the most crazy and at the same time awesome release of 2020. Igorr is definitely on their own planet when it comes to music and “Spirituality and Distortion” oozes of madness, craftiness, and true uniqueness. |
