Insomnium - Songs of the Dusk (2023)

cover

Just a few months after unleashing the melancholic masterpiece “Anno 1696”, Insomnium returns with a three song EP titled “Songs of the Dusk”. Featuring over 20 minutes of music, the band exploits their moody and doomier side in the release. As expected, filled with melancholy and gloom, this Finnish band continues to surprise listeners with high quality music and brilliant execution.

Opening with “Flowers of the Night”, we get a lush and highly engaging piece mixing sweeping guitar leads alongside crafty acoustic guitars and dreamy atmospherics. The mixture of clean and harsh vocals adds that extra layer of moodiness to this piece, making it one of our favorite tracks from this band. The heavy and yet dark “Stained in Red”, delivers waves of headbanging brilliance alongside some excellent tempo changes.

Featuring Cohen Janssen on keyboards, this release has an edgier and more elaborate atmospheric layer to it. A perfect example of this has to be the closer title track, unleashing nine minutes of moodiness. We are suckers for dramatic guitar leads, and Markus Vanhala and Jani Liimatainen are experts at delivering these. As a whole, “Songs of the Dusk” is a perfect addition to the band’s “Anno 1696” full length release from earlier in the year. For fans that are always wanting more Insomnium, the band certainly delivers with this one.
