Album Reviews

  • Desire - Crowcifix (2009)

    cover

Desire is an excellent Doom/Death Metal band that has been around for 15 years. And It makes me wonder why no label has picked up this band. Seven years have passed after the brilliant last full length "Locus Horrendus - The Night Cries Of A Sullen Soul" and this Portugese band is back with a Majestic an EP called "Crowcifix".

  • Jungle Rot - What Horrrors Await (2009)

    cover

Time passes by and Jungle Rot keep releasing their old school Death Metal albums that sound like if they where frozen in time. When I got into Death Metal I remember the bands having this dense gut punching guitar sound that many bands forgot how to play, or use it effectvly. Luckily the American band Jungle Rot is here to remind us what good Death Metal should sound like.

  • Fairyland - Score to a New Beginning (2009)

    cover

After releasing a great second album “The Fall of an Empire” this French band fell apart and all members left except for the keyboard player Philippe Giordana. Fast forward 3 years and “Score to a New Beginning” is released as a solo effort by the keyboardist and with countless guest appearances by renowned musicians. By doing this the album maintains the standard of quality set by “The Fall of an Empire” and takes the band to a whole new level.

  • Hacride – Lazarus (2009)

    cover

This French band took me by surprise with their very diverse sounding music. “Lazarus” is a release that stands out by the uniqueness of the band’s sound, something they have been consolidating for several years. The opening track of this album is a 15 minute epic master piece that serves as a perfect introduction to the musical journey that you are about to experience.

  • Dodsferd – Suicide and the Rest of Your Kind Will Follow (2009)

    cover

Directly from Greece this one man machine blows us away with his newest opus of Misanthropic Black Metal. Every once in a while we are graced by a release that is so raw and nihilistic, and this months turn belongs to Dodsferd. This album features 2 tracks but provides us with almost 40 minutes of true Black Metal that will make you suicidal (in a good way).

  • Horde Of Hel – Blodskam (2009)

    cover

When I got this promo, I was intrigued by how this band would sound since it’s said to feature anonymous legends from the Swedish Death/Black metal scene. I was not disappointed with Horde Of Hel this album is very raw and brutal with some hints of freshness in them.

  • Archgoat - The Light-Devouring Darkness (2009)

    cover

This Finish band plays the style of Black / Death metal that I dislike the most, so I’ll try to be as objective as possible for the sake of the review. The band had an 11 years hiatus and came back to deliver their satanic message with a vengeance. I must say that the sound quality of this album is exactly the similar to a low budget production circa early 90’s.

  • Ruins – Cauldron (2009)

    cover

The metal heads from Ruins hail from Tasmania, Australia, and their music is indeed very interesting. The band is labeled as Black Metal and you can clearly hear the influences and some songs a very straight forward Black metal (track 5). Other songs are a different mutation of Black Metal that I have a hard time pointing out.
