  • Kozeljnik - The Acheron of Multiform Negation (2013)

    cover

Continuing with the twisted Black Metal sound Kozeljnik brought upon us on their 2010 release “Deeper the Fall”, this Serbian outfit delivers six more tracks of punishing Black Metal with “Null: The Acheron of Multiform Negation”. With a dark and twisted edge to their sound, this band shows more improvements over their previous release and they create a very thick and heavy atmosphere for over 35 minutes of music on this album.

Opening with the melodic “As if Through a Myriad of Shades”, we get some excellent riffing and very fitting clean vocals that create quite a dense atmosphere. With obvious Black Metal roots, the band’s sound can be compared to other acts like Secrets of The Moon that bend the foundations of BM to their will and create nifty songs in the process. A perfect example of this is the crushing “Evoking the Furtive Depths (Reprisal)” featuring crafty guitar work and hellish vocals.

  • Kozeljnik – Deeper the Fall (2010)

    cover

In these times where most Black Metal bands are still doing what somebody else already did in the past, it’s very difficult to find something worth listening to and spending our hard earned money. Kozeljnik from Serbia might have a shot at being one of those few bands that are worth your money and your time.

“Deeper the Fall” is an album that while not original by any means, it does a great job in recapitulating what we all have experience in the last 10-15 years of Black Metal. The band merges Satyricon-style grooviness with different styles of singing and random elements that have worked for the genre in different occasions.

  • Aldaaron – Nous Reviendrons Immortels (2010)

    cover

After a furious intro track you brace your-self for another raw and brutal Black Metal release but as you keep listening to “Nous Reviendrons Immortels” you find that there is more to Aldaaron than just raw Black Metal.

The band style can be compared to a mixture of Himinbjørg, Mithotyn, and other Pagan/ Viking Metal bands but adding their own raw Black Metal elements to the mix.

  • Sectioned – Purulent Reality (2010)

    cover

Hailing from England we get Sectioned, a Death Metal band that takes us back to the glory days of the genre. “Purulent Reality” is being released by Paragon Records and showcases a very mature sounding band that can play a mean combination of Swedish and American Death Metal.

Featuring 7 songs and 43 minutes of music, “Purulent Reality” has longer than average songs for a DM release. But the band pulls them off by featuring a vast array of riffs and catchy solos. The overall old-school sound of the band is one of the most appealing features of Sectioned.

  • Aetherius Obscuritas - Black Medicine / Fekete Orvossag (2009)

    cover

Aetherius Obscuritas presents us their second release of majestic Black Metal that will surely put the on the map. This Hungarian band show they are a force to be reckoned by displaying brutal, but yet melodic, Black Metal in 11 tracks of pure evil.

The band shows a level of musical maturity that few young bands have. Mainly because Arkhorrl, the mastermind behind this evil entity, has been dissecting most major Black Metal bands and taking the best elements of each one of them, and improving over time (and 4 previous releases) has now achieved a brilliant sound that reminds you of all time greats like Marduk, Satyricon and Immortal, but has managed to make it his own adding his own twists and turns to the music.

  • Faust – From Glory To Infinity (2009)

    cover

Faust is an Italian band that has been around since 1992, and this is made very clear based on the skills of most of the band members. The music is very well played, but lacks a bit on the composition department (more on that later).

I’m a big fan of Melodic Death Metal, and it’s very rare in these days to find a good band that is not going all Metalcore on us. Alongside Ethereal Collapse, Faust is one of the best bands in the genre I’ve heard this year, since the melodic aspect is brilliant.
