    Urfaust – Einsiedler (2009)

    The Dutch duo of Urfaust comes back with their latest 2 song EP “Einsiedler” and after doing a bit of research about this band I figured I was into another pointless voyage from ‘just another’ crappy Ambient/Raw Black Metal band, and I was very wrong about this.

    “Einsiedler” features over 18 minutes of mesmerizing Ambient/Raw Black Metal that should be set as one of the standards for the genre. Their amazing ambiance created by the keyboards in the track “IX Einsiedler” is both eerie and enthralling I have not enjoyed a simple but well composed keyboard arrangement like this one in quite a while. While you still have the traditional shrieks on the song, they also added a very melodic clean vocal that complements the track to perfection. The overall down-tempo and doomy feeling of this song is amazing and it’s probably one of the reasons I enjoyed the full 11 minutes it lasts.

    A Forest Of Stars – The Corpse Of Rebirth (2008)

    A Forest Of Stars is one of those bands that is trying to push the barriers of music, by creating a very interesting sounding mix of different elements with Black Metal.

    This British quartet features Katie Stone (ex My Dying Bride) as the ‘Queen Of Ghost’ and other equally interestingly named characters: Mr. Curse, The Gentleman and Mr T.S. Kettleburner.

    Impiety – Terroreign: Apocalyptic Armageddon Command (2009)

    The Trashy Death/Black Metal trio of Singapore is back with their sixth full length album that brings back their old school sound. Since the first track this album is very fast paced and intense, something that I was not expecting from this band.

    Impiety’s only founding member is their guitarist and vocalist: Shyaithan. He is the driving force behind the band’s almost 20 year trajectory and their old school sound that is desperately needed these days.

    Malfeitor – Incubus (2009)

    After their amazing debut album “Unio Mystica Maxima”, Malfeitor is back with their aggressive raw Black Metal. Featuring M. Fabban of Aborym on bass and vocals you can start to imagine what to expect from this band.

    This Italian five-piece have been around only since 2006, and since their first release they have been turning heads. The band has managed to create an astounding combination of old school Swedish and Norwegian Black Metal that is very grim and raw.

    Dark Celebration - Phlegeton: The Transcendence Of Demon Lords (2009)

    Dark Celebration is an old school Death/Black Metal band from Brazil that is trying to keep the style alive. “Phlegeton….” marks their second full length album but strangely enough it’s only 30 minutes long.

    The band’s style is very reminiscent of early Morbid Angel and to me it sounds very similar to The Chasm. The band tries to bring back that old school style that I haven’t heard in a while, and they do so to some extent.

    Migdal Bavel – De Magia Veterum (2009)

    If you are in the search for an album that will attack your ears mercilessly until they bleed, you are in the right place ”De Magia Verterum” features 10 tracks of very brutal and raw Black Metal.

    This album comes very close to “The Codex Necro” of Anaal Nathrakh in terms of aural insanity. Migdal Bavel have managed to release something that will make you want to check yourself into a mental home after listening to it for a few times.

    Forest Stream - The Crown of Winter (2009)

    Have you ever wondered what a band with multiple personality disorder (MPD) would sound?, well look no further since Forest Stream has a very interesting case of MPD.“The Crown Of Winter” features 4 tracks of amazing Gothic Death/ Doom Metal, 2 tracks of Melodic Black Metal (Emperor style) and one intro and one outro tracks.

    While the band excels at both styles, it’s still pretty weird to listen to such a shocking change from one song to the other!. Luckily for them I’m not a genre purist and only reviews one type of music well and trashes the rest, since this would have been very negative for this amazing release.

    Imperial Vengeance - At the Going Down of the Sun (2009)

    Imperial Vengeance took me by surprise when I first started listening to this album, I honestly did not expect much from it since the only thing I knew about the band was that Charles Hedger, a live member of Cradle Of Filth plays in it.

    The band’s overall bombastic sound is what makes this release so interesting, since the 2nd track you are blown away by interesting orchestrations and deranged sounding vocals, a very original atmosphere that very few bands can pull off (like The Vision Bleak). I must say that this band is one of the weirdest and most original I’ve heard in quite a while, the band’s label for their sound is “Dark Aristocratic Metal" which sounds very accurate to me since they present a very rich Dark Metal sound.

    Pantheon-I - Worlds I Create (2009)

    Pantheon I is a five piece outfit from Norway that play traditional Black Metal with a very interesting sounding twist, they use Cello arrangements to complement their blasphemous music.

    While it’s nothing new to use <insert any instrument here> with Black Metal, Pantheon I actually achieved a very characteristic sound that not many bands trying to mix something with BM have achieved.

    Anaal Nathrakh - In The Constellation Of The Black Widow (2009)

    Be prepared to be blown away by this album since the first minute you start playing it. Anaal Nathrakh are back to their older and more brutal sound in a bestial way. I think this is the band’s more brutal material since “The Codex Necro” and it’s probably one of the best albums of the year in my opinion.

    The production of this album is amazing overlaying tons of vocal styles, fast as hell drumming and amazing guitar riffs unlike anything I’ve heard this year. “In The Constellation Of The Black Widow” rapes our eardrums with 10 furious tracks that are not recommended for the faint of heart.
