Southern Lord

  • The Accüsed - The Curse of Martha Splatterhead (2009)

    cover

With Tommy Niemeyer as the only original member to remain in The Accüsed, the band is back with their characteristic Crossover sound. While “The Curse of Martha Splatterhead” is not one of their finest albums, it’s good enough to keep the fans of the band happy.

“The Curse of Martha Splatterhead” features 14 relentless tracks that showcase Tommy’s skills at creating riffs that transform across Trash, Punk and Harcore. A feat that not many guitarist can do, but Tommy has years of experience under his belt.

  • Black Cobra – Chronomega (2009)

    cover

Black Cobra is a two man band that plays very rudimentary but effective Sludge/Doom Metal, something that newer bands have problems doing so, by trying to be ‘extra awesome’ and using assloads of different distortions and fancy recording gimmicks.

“Chronomega” features 9 tracks of crushing Sludge Metal, now on Southern Lord, the band shows that their basic style is effective enough to trump any other release of this genre. It’s heavy, is ‘sluggish’, is lo-fi, and it’s very effective.

  • Wolves In The Throne Room – Black Cascade (2009)

    cover

After their great EP: “Malevolent Grain”, I was expecting this album to continue where the band left off in that release. And they sure did, and raise the bar to a different level. “Black Cascade” features some greatly emotional Black metal that plenty of bands wish they can achieve.

This release takes you into a dark journey mixed with aggressiveness and emotions. The sound quality is not the best out there but it clearly adds to the music and it’s probably intended this way. The four songs clock around 50 minutes, and while some of them can get to be a bit repetitive at some parts, the band makes it up by constantly changing the pace. There are no female vocals or clean vocals in this release, only harsh black metal vocals that sound excellent with the songs.
