Malevolent Creation – Invidious Dominion (2010)

cover

Legendary American Death Metal band Malevolent Creation is finally back with another hard-hitting face-pounding release that will blow you away. “Invidious Dominion” is yet another powerful release in the band’s 23+ years in the business, marking the return of Jason Blachowicz to the band (for the 2nd time).

If you are a Death Metal fans and have never heard of this band before, you are either 18 years old, or a complete poser and you need to stop reading… maybe not, but there is plenty of research you need to do in order to call yourself a Metal head. Anyways, the band feels completely rejuvenated and they totally kill on this release. Each of the 11 tracks are fast paced and as brutal as ever.

Brett Hoffmann on also his 3rd stint with the band delivers a very solid performance. And while his vocals have never been too deep or completely ‘growl-y’ like other DM singers, he still does a good job in transmitting aggression and brutality to the band’s already sinister music.

As you can imagine, the music is brutal and fast-paced with catchy riffs and powerful melodies. The band’s DM style is not as groovy as Cannibal Corpse or Immolation, but it works pretty well since its straight forward and brutal. The one thing you might notice is that most songs sound very similar and this might get tired for some, but this is what Malevolent Creation sounds like and they do it with style.

On top of the riffing machine and powerful vocals, we have the brutal drumming of Gus Rios. The drumming is both fast paced and very well executed, making us tired of just listening to it and imagining how fast must he be hitting those drums and the double kick. The bass guitar makes a constant appearance through the album and is very well mixed allowing our ears to keep pounding since track 1.

Overall, “Invidious Dominion” is an album that will be greatly liked and respected by fans of the band and the current wave of Death Metal kiddies that are trying to get into the older (and much better) Death Metal bands. This release is sure worth our hard earned money.
