Prosanctus Inferi - Pandemonic Ululations of Vesperic Palpitation (2010)

cover

Featuring J. Kohn of Black Funeral (USA) fame, Prosanctus Inferi is one of those bands that you will either love or hate to death. Their style merges Black and Death Metal elements into a blender and creates very brutal and mostly aimless 2-3 minute musical ‘compositions’ that will either make you headbang like crazy or scratch your head wondering WTF is going on.

“Pandemonic Ululations of Vesperic Palpitation” the band’s first full-length album features 13 songs and around 25 minutes of sheer brutality. If you like your music to be extremely brutal and somewhat pointless then this is the album for you. The band’s drummer Antichristus committed suicide before the release of this album.

The band’s style can be somewhat called original since it sounds like the equivalent of a Black Metal version of Gridcore, the vocals vary from low and high growls and vile shrieks that will creep out your neighbors (and probably yourself) almost immediately. The guitar work varies between ‘rhythmical’ brutality and some leads here and there but nothing too concise. The drumming is equally puzzling since it’s very harsh, but somewhat disorganized.

One of the interesting facts of the band’s song names is that while sometimes they sound equally lame to Profanatica’s song names (i.e. “Burning Vestal Apocrypha”, “Cauterizing Unholy Lesions”), they band actually picked up a dictionary and found interesting words to use for their song titles (i.e. “Pontifical Undulations of Blasphemic Gesticulation” and “Flayed Ecclesian Sophistry”). We don’t have anything against ‘dumb’ song names and lyrics; we just find them funny and interesting to talk about.

If you like brutality and complete dissonance, you will love this release. If you are looking for something clearer and more ‘musical’ then look somewhere else.
