Neurosis – Live at Roadburn 2007 (2010)

cover

In the eve of the band’s 25th anniversary and after a 3 year waiting period, we finally get a ‘new’ release from Neurosis, in the form of the live CD “Live at Roadburn 2007”. With amazing clarity and masterful production behind this release, you closer than ever to having Neurosis play in your living room in CD form at least (We are still waiting for a proper live DVD/Blu-ray featuring 5.1 or even 7.1 audio).

For all of us ‘old-school’ Neurosis fans “Live at Roadburn” comes with a bit of disappointment since this release features songs from “Times of Grace” till the bands 2007 album “Given to the Rising” but nothing else from before. However, with the band’s previous live CD’s and the bootlegs we can get that fix.

As you can expect Neurosis is one of those bands that has to sound ‘just right’ all the time in order to get the full experience. In this release the people at the Roadburn festival (and the sound guys of the band) have achieved this to perfection, the band sound amazing and it’s been captured brilliantly on this recording. All the percussions, guitars and effects sound perfectly, creating the eerie and crushing atmosphere that the band is known for.

One thing that we noticed is that the crowd screams between songs are very low, maybe they where mixed this way or maybe everybody was blown away by the bands performance (like it has happened to us). In comparison to most live CD’s we think this is fairly interesting since most bands try to showcase how many and how crazy the concert was (in terms of fans roaring).

We don’t really have to tell you how amazing each song is since you’ve heard of the band. If you are new to the band then this is a very good example of their latest material and how crushing and yet experimental the band really is. Every instrument is played to perfection that is for sure, and the vocals are as good as ever. The band clearly puts in the hours to deliver epic live performances that capture the music’s sound and soul with equal clarity.

With three tracks from each of the band’s last albums, people that got into the band ‘later’ will definitely worship this live CD. If you are an older fan of the band, this release is still greatly enjoyable and has better sound that any of their previous live stuff (in our opinion). So if you love Neurosis, you should definitely pick this one up together with the re-issue of “Enemy of the Sun”, also released the same day.
