Ion – Immaculada (2011)

cover

Following the same path that Duncan Patterson forged for himself with his side-project Íon and their first release “Madre, Protégenos”, “Immaculada” brings to the listener a hefty dose of World/Ethnic music with Celtic and Folk elements that will transport the listener to an ethereal world were everything seems peaceful and serene. One can quickly understand why Patterson decided to pursue his own interests after leaving Nick Moss and Antimatter to create Íon.

Duncan Patterson in “Immacualda” once again presents us with a wide variety of musicians and singers coming together in creating a very cohesive release that delivers in every aspect and creates a very peaceful atmosphere for the duration of this album. Every instrument is clearly presented in a way that allows the listener to feel all the emotions behind them.

As stated by Patterson, the music paints Irish and Mediterranean landscapes beautifully creating a very hypnotic atmosphere. In the self-titled track, we are greeted by beautiful phrases in Spanish that reminded us of the eerie words spoken by Penelope Cruz in the “Abre los ojos movie” and when the music starts your mind will be free to divagate for the duration of this album. “Temptation” kicks things up a notch with beautiful string sections and adorned with Lisa Cuthbert amazing vocals.

On the albums first ‘single’ “Adoration”, we again have a very peaceful due to the flutes and guitars that adorn the beautiful vocals. The Celtic influences are also very evident and create a very lush experience. If you like ethereal pieces, then you will definetly enjoy “Damhsa Na Gceithre Ghaoth” and it’s amazing pace, greatly highlighted by flutes and the minimal drumming in the song.

For us “Invidia” presents the most melancholic piece of this release. The 10 minute epic “Cetatea Cisnadioara” presents a more minimalist side of things but showcases very impressive female vocal sections and some spoken parts that will haunt your dreams for days. Similarly in “The Silent Stars” we have these spoken sections accompanied by a nice piano melody. Closing the album we have “Return to Spirit”, a very martial song that features bits and pieces of what has been presented through the album, making this song a very worthy closing piece of the album.

While not presenting us with any Metal or Neo-folk/classical music, Duncan Patterson impresses us with his releases every time. “Immaculada” might not appeal to most readers of this site, but it’s a very powerful release that will transport you to different places due to the highly emotional content behind the songs. If you liked any of the Antimatter stuff, or you just enjoy nice and relaxing music, then you will be blow away by ‘Immaculada” and its beautiful palette of sounds.
