Wombwrecker – Wombwrecker (2012)

cover

Delivering a heavy dose of Deathcore, today we have England’s Wombwrecker and their self-titled digital EP. Playing a very vanilla type of Deathcore, the band has produced 7 tracks that are devoid of any originality and sound brutal for the sake of being brutal. With all the Deathcore band’s spanning in the last few years, one would expect that they would at least focus on not sounding all alike, but we guess that Wombwrecker missed the memo.

Immediately pounding away with “Introduction”, the band established that their sound is going to be brutal and that their guitars will be heavy as fuck. In terms of the structure of what they are playing, we can’t really say we haven’t heard this before. The brutal vocals make their appearance in the second track “No Sluts, No Glory”, and they are as heavy as any other band in the genre like Oceano, Acacia Strain, etc., we have no complaints in this department since they are as brutal as they can be.

The riffing starts getting repetitive on “Death Curse”, a song that just sounds exactly the same as the one before with minor rhythmical variations. The drumming is pretty solid, but we feel that it was mixed a bit low and gets drowned most of the time by the massive guitar sound. Our favorite track has to be “Interlude”, this at least diverges from the repetition of the other tracks and the atmosphere of it is quite cool alongside the cool movie sample.

Closing the release we have “Rauchenburg” and “Faltliner”, two tracks that… you can guess… they sound the same. It would be a different thing if the band had more imagination when making songs, or at least add some technical difficulty to their sound. While bands like Oceano and Black Dahlia Murdrer keep their core intact (no pun intended), they have managed to find ways to make their songs challenging and somewhat different. We feel that Wombwrecker (awesome name by the way) still has miles to go before actually being ready to take the spotlight.
