Alter self – Promo (2012)

cover

Delivering three excellent Death/Thrash Metal tracks, today we have Alter self and their 2012 promo. In this short but sweet release, we are treated to nearly 12 minutes of very well composed music that will have you headbanging since the first minute. With a well-balanced mixture of old-school Thrash and aggressive Death Metal elements, this band has a very clear and direct sound that many others can only dream about.

Opening with a bang, “My Sober Reflection” delivers very powerful riffs and a very nice bass guitar line that is pulsating in the background. With a very aggressive sound, this track delivers a hefty balance between Melodic Thrash Metal and hard-hitting Death Metal. The band’s musical abilities are pretty solid and all elements of this song work very well together.

Our favorite track of this release is the rollercoaster ride titled “Fovea”. In this track the band explores brilliant melodic passages intertwined with more traditional Thrash Metal sections. The riffing again is very top-notch, but the crazy melodic passages that feature guitar and bass guitar acrobatics steal the show in this track.

The closer “Separation from God” is another fine example of how well the band blends melodic elements with a very aggressive core. The bass guitar is very present in this track and nicely gives the music that extra dimension that many bands lack. The harsh vocals are very firm and aggressive, allowing the music to sound more brutal. There are a few sections here and there that reminded us of the classical Death sound, a truly impressive feat for a band with not full-length releases under their belt.

As part of their upcoming debut album “Seven Deadly Blessings”, this promo is a very impressive sampler of the extreme potential that Alter self has. If you are looking for melodic and aggressive Death/Thrash Metal, be sure to keep an eye out for this very exciting young band.
