Armagedon – Death Then Nothing (2010)

cover

Finally making its way to North America, today we have Armagedon’s second full-length album “Death Then Nothing”. For a band that was broken up for around 12 years (from 1994 to 2006), they sure do a great job in bringing back their in-you-face Death Metal style that is constantly tried to be mimicked by young bands these days.

With all the current DM kiddies trying to copy old bands, it’s nice and refreshing to actually hear an old band kicking ass and taking names with a refined ‘old school style’ music that will make legions of DM fans start headbanging since track 1. As you can imagine Armagedon is nothing close to be ‘innovative’, but they excel at the basics.

With meaty hooks and powerful riffs, Armagedon delivers a full-on DM assault that will make you get up your seat and start breaking shit once “Death Then Nothing” starts playing on your sound system. The band never departs from the crushing repetitive riffs that made all of us love DM. With a hefty variety of riffs through the album, Armagedon never gets dull or boring.

The vocals are pretty standard for a DM release, featuring low growls that get to be a bit monotonous, but get the job done. There aren’t any faggy breakdowns or clean vocals if you are still wondering about this. The drumming is very tight and it’s constantly blasting through the 10 songs presented in “Death Then Nothing”.

As far as ‘innovation’ goes, the band does add some weird samples here and there, most notably some middle eastern sounds at the end of “Seeing is Believing”. Usually, there are some keyboard highlights at the end of some songs, but nothing major that would make us stop enjoying this fine neck-breaking DM release.

Overall, we can say that we greatly enjoyed Armagedon’s sophomore effort “Death Then Nothing” since it goes back to the basics with some added value and great production values.
