Untimely Demise – City of Steel (2011)

All the way from the Nordic lands of Canada, today we have Untimely Demise’s debut full-length release “City of Steel. While the band plays the traditional Thrash/Death Metal game, there are a few elements here and there to make this release standout from the countless dull bands we get every week.

Having some early Children of Bodom (vocals and some guitar work) edge makes “City of Steel” a nice 32 minute release that will not go easily forgotten. In the opening “Virtue In Death” track, we have the traditional Thrash/Death Metal sound back in the day, but the guitar work is what makes this song (and album) more entertaining and different.

The mixture of ‘classical’ elements with newer ones in songs like “Hunting Evil”, “City of Steel” and “Forget of Belief” is really well crafted and allows the band to nicely create their own unique sound while still being true to the legends of the genre. Solos like on “Hunting Evil” made us immediately want to start playing our air guitars, and this is a great sign that we actually enjoyed the release.

In a power ballad fashion, “Unmaker” has a very interesting opening before delivering a powerful riff attack like in the good old days. However, the epic closing section of this track is what makes it our favorite song of the album. Closing the album we have “Bloodsoaked Mission”, a more traditional and straight forward track that when you think you know where it is going, the band delivers a merciless melodic attack that will have you scratching your head, but also headbanging to it.

Finally picked up by Sonic Unyon records, Untimely Demise can do some serious damage with their very well crafted sound. The band has all the right elements in terms of musicians and sound to be enjoyed by Metal heads over the world. If you are looking for a nice Thrash-y release with amazing guitar work and dominating vocals, look no further and add “City of Steel” to your collection.
